18 Sep Twelve things to consider putting in place to protect your business concept
- Do you think your invention or product works differently to what is already out there? Then consider patent protection before you launch your product.
- Do you think your invention or product looks new, different and has an interesting design? Then consider protecting the design ideally before you launch.
- What is your product called (trade mark)? Try not call it what it is, strong trade marks don’t describe the product or services.
- Design a trade mark and transfer copyright from graphic designer to you or your business.
- Secure and register a company name on the company register.
- Secure and register your trade mark on the Trade Mark Register.
- Secure relevant domain names and variations.
- Mark your website with the appropriate copyright and IP notices.
- Mark your product with the appropriate symbols eg. ™©®, Patent Pending etc
- Ensure a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) is in place when negotiating with potential business partners, buyer or sponsors.
- Ensure copyright and IP rights are retained with your business if developed outside your business.
- Ensure all IP clauses are carefully drafted when contracting with third parties in particular licensing or selling your business or part thereof.
